Publicly-funded schools in England get extra funding from the government to help them improve the attainment of their disadvantaged pupils.

Evidence shows that children from disadvantaged backgrounds:

generally face extra challenges in reaching their potential at school
often do not perform as well as their peers

The pupil premium grant is designed to allow schools to help disadvantaged pupils by improving their progress and the exam results they achieve.” (Department for Education, Updated 1st February 2021)

The Pupil Premium Grant for the 2021-22 Financial Year will be based on data submitted in the October 2020 school census. This includes pupils who are known to have been eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) since October 2014, as well as those first known to be eligible in October 2020.

In order to raise the attainment of the pupils who attract the PPG, we continue to follow the tiered approach to spending advocated by The Education Endowment Foundation which also now features on the Department for Education website:

Teaching - Ensuring high quality first class teaching for all pupils, from which disadvantaged pupils are known to disproportionally benefit.
Targeted academic support - We will continue with our embedded tracking tool to ensure that pupils eligible for the PPG make good and accelerated progress in Reading, Writing and Mathematics and use this tool to identify the most effective short term interventions needed for those pupils who require additional modelling and tuition. We will also be using ‘Pre-teach’ strategies for some pupils as an effective model for targeted academic support.
Wider Strategies - The remainder of the grant will be used to support pupils with wider non-academic barriers to learning including attendance, behaviour and social and emotional support. This includes the role of our Pastoral Manager to support pupils and families for whom these barriers pose problems. As always, we will also be funding a wide range of extra-curricular clubs, promoting the participation in these for disadvantaged pupils and rewarding pupils through the Children’s University scheme.
