Science Week Adventures in Year 2

Science Week was an exciting opportunity for our young scientists to explore big questions through hands‑on experiments, data collection, and plenty of curiosity.

One of our investigations looked at whether humans, like sharks, reveal their age through their height. After measuring and comparing our own heights, the children concluded that—unlike sharks—you can’t tell a person’s age just by how tall they are. A great example of using real data to challenge assumptions.

We also put Murphy’s Law to the test by flipping buttered slices of toast to see whether they really do tend to land butter‑side down. The children loved gathering results, spotting patterns, and debating what might influence the outcome.

Another highlight was our raft‑building challenge. Using only card and foil, children designed and constructed boats to see which could hold the most cubes before sinking. When a raft didn’t perform as expected, the children eagerly redesigned, rebuilt, and tested again—showing fantastic resilience, teamwork, and problem‑solving.

Science Week was full of discovery, creativity, and plenty of “aha!” moments. We’re already looking forward to next year’s investigations.
