Values in Action - Forgiveness

Updated: 2 days ago

This term we have been learning about what the Bible says about Forgiveness.

“Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive others”

Colossians 3:13

We have reflected on stories and scripture about what forgiveness really means. We recognise that this is a really hard thing to do. But have heard inspiring accounts of how people can forgive those who may have done terrible things.

Our focus on forgiveness helps us with mental health, strengthens friendships, and builds self-esteem by helping us let go of anger and resentment.

Key Teachings on Forgiveness

  • Forgiveness is conditional on forgiving others:

Jesus stated, "If you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins".

  • Forgiveness should be limitless:

When asked how many times he should forgive his brother, Peter suggested seven times. Jesus replied, "not seven times, but seventy-seven times," symbolizing limitless forgiveness.

  • We must forgive from the heart:

The parable of the unforgiving servant illustrates that God will act against those who do not forgive others from the heart, just as he treated the servant who was forgiven a massive debt but refused to forgive a smaller one owed to him.

  • Forgiveness is an act of love and mercy:

Jesus taught to "love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you". This act of mercy is a reflection of how God "causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good".

  • Forgive as you are forgiven:

The Lord's Prayer includes the line, "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us," which connects our relationship with God directly to our willingness to forgive others.

  • Jesus himself exemplified forgiveness:

While on the cross, Jesus prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do".
